Il est grand … très grand même, il trône majestueusement sur mon bureau depuis quelques jours, ce nouvel iMac est véloce et imposant. En voici un petit essai !
Le modèle que j’ai commandé est un iMac 27″ équipé du processeur quad-core i7 à 2,8 GHz, de 4 Go de RAM, d’une carte graphique ATI Radeon HD 4850 avec 512 Mo de GDDR3 et d’un disque dur de 1 To.
L’écran
Commençons par ce qui saute aussitôt aux yeux ! Cet écran est une véritable réussite disons-le tout de suite ! Mon choix a été orienté vers le 27″ parce qu’il permet d’afficher 2 pages web ou 2 pages A4 à 100% côte-à-côte, ce qui est au final très pratique pour travailler. Cette nouvelle taille d’écran chez Apple est dicté par le choix d’un écran 16/9 et non plus 16/10 comme précédemement. Ce nouvel iMac n’est donc pas plus haut que les iMac 24″ mais simplement plus large. C’est une sorte de dual-screen en un seul écran !
L’écran est très très lumineux, je dirais presque même trop. Je l’utilise le plus souvent à seulement la moitié de la luminosité car « à fond » il est éblouissant. Lors de ma première utilisation de Safari sur l’iMac j’ai eu l’impression de redécouvrir les sites que j’ai l’habitude de consulter, en effet avec le MacBook 13″, l’affichage est plutôt restreint, alors que sur l’iMac les sites prennent toute leur ampleur. Un exemple ? Sur l’iMac les 10 premiers résultats de Google s’affichent sans avoir besoin de faire défiler la page !
Vous voulez regarder des vidéos sur l’iMac ? Oubliez tout de suite vos divx de qualité standard, en plein écran il seront plutôt pixélisés, par contre pour tout ce qui est haute-définition, allez-y vous serez littéralement scotché devant votre écran !
Extérieur
Le design de ce nouvel iMac est dans la continuité des générations précédentes, à la différence près qu’il est maintenant construit d’un seul bloc d’aluminium (comme les MacBook Pro) ce qui rend sont design encore plus réussi et plus fin. Et ce qui permet surtout de mieux évacuer la chaleur, et c’est vrai qu’il chauffe pas mal.
Son
Toutes les comparaisons que j’ai lu entre cet iMac et la génération précédente s’accordent à dire que le son est meilleur et plus puissant sur ce nouvel opus. En effet, le son est puissant, les basses sont bien présentes. Les hauts-parleurs offrent une qualité sonore toute à fait satisfaisante pour regarder un film ou écouter de la musique, le seul reproche que l’on peut faire c’est que l’on a parfois l’impression que le son provient du bas, ce qui est le cas puisque les haut-parleurs sont situés sous l’écran. Mais bon c’est vraiment être tatillon !
Souris
Ce nouvel iMac est livré de série avec le clavier sans fils et la nouvelle souris, la Magic Mouse. Passons sur le clavier qui n’a pas changé et attardons-nous un peu sur cette nouvelle souris. Le point faible de la Mighty Mouse était sa roulette, maintenant le défilement est devenu le point fort de Magic Mouse, toute la surface est multitouch est cela devient un régal de parcourir de longues pages ou de lire un document Word ou un PDF, ou bien même de parcourir les dossiers dans le Finder car le défilement latéral se fait très bien aussi.
En utilisant 2 doigts et en glissant latéralement, dans Safari on peut retourner sur la page précédente, c’est tout simplement pratique !
Connectique
Ici rien que du très classique : 4 USB, 1 Firewire 800, 1 entrée et 1 sortie audio, 1 port ethernet Gigabit, et un Mini DisplayPort. Seul innovation ici, le Mini DisplayPort permet d’utiliser l’iMac comme écran en appuyant sur Cmd + F2.
Notons aussi le port SD qui se situe sous le Superdrive.
Processeur
C’est une des pièces maitresses avec l’écran ! Cette nouvelle génération d’iMac est la première à être équipée de processeurs à 4 cœurs. Tous les benchmarks le montrent ces nouveaux processeurs sont très rapides, le i5 est 50% plus rapide que le processeur « de base » Core 2 Duo à 3,06 GHz et le i7 est carrément 2 fois plus rapide rivalisant avec les Mac Pro. Mon iMac est équipé de ce processeur i7 à 2,8 GHz. La différence entre le i5 et le i7 autre que le fréquence, respectivement 2,66 et 2,8 GHz est que le i7 est doté de la technologie Hyper-Threading qui permet d’avoir un cœur virtuel pour chaque cœur physique, au final on a donc 8 cœurs.
Là rien à dire c’est rapide, très rapide même. On peut seulement regretter que peu de logiciels soient vraiment optimisés pour tirer partie de toute cette puissance. Parmi ceux que j’ai utilisé, le logiciel tirant le plus partie de toute cette puissance est pour moi Handbrake en version 64 bit qui convertit tout très rapidement.
L’iMac est livré d’origine avec 4 Go de RAM, même si c’est largement suffisant, ce Mac incite tellement de part son processeur et sa capacité d’affichage à utiliser plusieurs application à la fois,qu’ il me semble qu’installer 2x2Go de plus dans les slots vides devra être rapidement envisagé.
Je n’ai pas réalisé de test plus poussé car la comparaison entre un MacBook Core 2 Duo à 2,16 Ghz vieux de 3 ans et ce nouvel iMac n’apporterait pas grand chose. Les tests les plus concrets pour moi sont ceux réalisé par le MacWord Lab :
Faut-il vraiment prendre l’option i7 ou se contenter du i5 ? Quand on regarde les benchmarks on s’aperçoit que le i7 est 25 % plus rapide que le i5, la réponse dépend de votre utilisation ! Si vous maniez régulièrement des gros fichiers et que fassiez du montage vidéo, orientez-vous vers le i7, sinon le i5 saura vous combler !
J’ai choisi le i7 en pariant sur le fait que les logiciels vont profiter de plus en plus de la puissance des multicœurs et pour pouvoir monter des vidéos HD.
Conclusion :
Apple annonce ce nouvel iMac comme « Le tout-en-un ultime avec un écran sublime » … et bien … c’est vrai ! Si vous recherchez un ordinateur rapide avec un grand écran, l’iMac est fait pour vous !

@Guy Bastien: euh, à priori je devrais être mal placé pour te répondre, vu que je n’ai pas ce modèle, car j’ai fait l’acquisition d’un iMac 24 pouces début 2009. Là où je me permets de te répondre, c’est que déjà le modèle que j’utilise depuis près de deux ans brille justement… par son silence de fonctionnement.
Mon bureau est une pièce à part, ce qui me permet de l’isoler du bruit du reste de la maison. Eh bien je peux te dire que si l’écran (juste l’écran !) est en veille, tu as l’impression de te trouver face à un ordinateur éteint, pas moins !!! A côté, mon pc est un véritable ouragan lorsqu’il tourne, bruit dû au ventilo très présent. Et puis il te suffit d’aller dans un magasin et de te pencher relativement près d’un iMac pour te rendre compte (même parmi les brouhaha d’un magasin empli de gens) que l’on entend vraiment rien du fonctionnement de la bête.
Quant on sait qu’en plus d’un silence proverbial la performance n’est pas en reste, franchement l’hésitation n’a plus lieu d’être !!!

Je le possède également, et c’est tout simplement une merveille, extrêmement silencieux et un foudre de guerre, merci a l’écran 27″ qui permet de visualiser 2 pages internet simultanément. Perso je ne fais quasiment jamais de montage vidéo, par contre dès que j’ne fait c’est avec mon iphone 4S donc en 1080p. Je dois avouer que c’est terrible. La définition de l’écran est elle aussi saisissante. 4G de RAM c’est un peu léger, mais pour lire des mkv et naviguer sur le net , cv’est amplement suffisant.
